A Grunge Music Dashboard That Hits All the Right Notes

Grunge wasn’t just music—it was a movement. So we built a dashboard that doesn’t just show the top grunge albums of the 1990s… it lets you experience them.

This interactive Tableau visualisation takes you back to the golden decade of plaid shirts and distorted guitars, plotting iconic albums on a scatter chart by release year and estimated sales. But instead of dots, we used retro CD icons—each one clickable, triggering a live track from that album to play on a tiny, CRT television in the corner.

Yes. A working CRT TV.
Yes. Actual live clips from the 90s.

💿 Every CD is clickable
📺 Every clip is real
📊 Every visual has meaning

grunge data storytelling

Whether you’re a data nerd, a music fan, or a bit of both, this dashboard invites you to explore, discover, and maybe even relive a few noisy memories.

What’s Under the Hood?

  • Scatter plot design shows how grunge albums evolved commercially over time.

  • CD icons scale with sales volume—Nirvana and Pearl Jam tower above the rest.

  • Embedded video integration plays live clips from each album, right inside the visual.

  • Easter eggs and design flourishes nod to the DIY, analogue aesthetic of the era.

Why We Built This

At Perceptive Data, we specialise in interactive data storytelling—designing dashboards that don’t just show numbers, but communicate meaning. Whether it’s sales trends, performance outcomes, or even the evolution of a music genre, we bring data to life through thoughtful, user-first design.

And let’s face it—data deserves a great soundtrack too.
