An interactive exploration of electricity generation
It’s been a while, but we’ve finally updated our Electricity Generation in Australia Dashboard with the latest data for 2024.
This interactive Tableau dashboard explores electricity generation quantities and trends across Australia. It’s one of the few dashboards we can share publicly, giving people a glimpse into how interactive visual analytics can help users explore their specific areas of interest, while still seeing the overall picture.
The dashboard uses colour purposefully to differentiate renewable from non-renewable sources, and allows you to dig deeper by state or generation type.
Here are some takeaways from the 2024 update:
-
Non-renewables still make up the majority of generation. While renewables continue to grow their share, the pace at which the gap is closing has slowed.
-
Black coal remains dominant, accounting for more than a third of total generation, with output increasing in 2024.
-
Brown coal, mostly Victorian, has remained reasonably steady over the past three years.
-
Among renewables, small-scale solar PV continues its surge, doubling output since 2020, while wind generation growth has slowed over the past two years.
We encourage you to explore the dashboard and see what insights you can uncover for yourself!

In our demonstration dashboard, colour conveys a meaning, and is not utilised purely for decoration.
It’s a small example of what purposeful design and interactive visualisation can achieve – telling data stories clearly, while allowing the reader to ask their own questions of the data.
