Waste analytics and reporting dashboards for local government

Rural and regional councils manage significant volumes of waste across kerbside collections, transfer stations, and recycling streams. Understanding what is actually happening with that waste, including the trends, the costs, and the diversion rates, is harder than it should be. The data exists. Getting it into a form that is useful for decision making and government reporting is where many councils struggle.
Perceptive Data works with local government to build waste analytics dashboards that give councils a clear, accurate picture of their waste data and the tools to report on it confidently.

What we deliver

We work with councils from the ground up. Whether your data is clean and structured or spread across spreadsheets and multiple systems, we start where you are and build toward a reporting environment that works.

Our work for local government typically includes:
  • Data strategy and pipeline development, bringing together disparate waste data sources into a single reliable dataset
  • Dashboard design and delivery in Tableau or Power BI, tailored to council officers, management, and council reporting requirements
  • Contractor data auditing, verifying the accuracy of data coming in from outsourced kerbside collection providers, including identification of missing or erroneous values and trend validation
  • Household activity analysis, including average mass per tenement, helping councils measure the effectiveness of waste diversion education programs
We also work with councils on positioning their data for AI-assisted analysis, building a semantics layer that describes the data so that council officers can ask questions of it directly. This complements the dashboard and extends what councils can do with their data over time.

Why councils work with us

Many rural and regional councils do not have dedicated business intelligence resources in-house. IT staff may be skilled across general support but not in data visualisation or analytics. Large consulting firms can address this, but often lack the close working relationship that smaller councils need and may not have specific local government waste experience.
Perceptive Data is a specialist consultancy led personally by Grant Henderson. Every project is handled directly by Grant, which means consistent expertise, close collaboration, and no handoffs to junior team members. We have worked with local government on waste analytics specifically and understand the reporting obligations, the data challenges, and the outcomes councils are working toward.
We work with messy, incomplete data. Every organisation believes their data environment is uniquely difficult. In our experience, most councils start from a similar position, and the path from messy spreadsheets to a clear reporting dashboard is well-trodden ground for us.

Colac Otway Shire Council

We recently completed a waste analytics project with Colac Otway Shire Council, developing a Tableau dashboard that brought together waste data from multiple sources, reconciled contractor data, and gave the council a clear view of landfill volumes, diversion rates, and cost trends. Read the full case study to see how the project came together.
